Tax shocker in South Bengaluru: 50 properties in Jayanagar zone face auction today
Bengaluru, March 12: The Bengaluru South City Corporation will auction 50 properties in the Jayanagar zone on Friday for failing to clear pending property tax dues, Commissioner K.N. Ramesh said in a public notice.
The auction, scheduled at 11 a.m. on March 13 at the office of the Joint Commissioner (Jayanagar Zone-1) in Jayanagar 2nd Block, is part of the civic body’s effort to tighten property tax collection after repeated notices and reminders to defaulters.
The move comes amid efforts to strengthen revenue streams of the newly formed Bengaluru South City Corporation, one of the five corporations created after the State government restructured the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike under the Greater Bengaluru Authority framework. Property tax is the largest source of revenue for city corporations, funding road works, drainage maintenance, solid waste management and other civic services.
Officials said property owners who had defaulted were served show-cause notices and demand notices, and were repeatedly alerted through mobile messages to clear their dues. Under the Property Tax Assessment, Collection and Management Rules, 2024, authorities can initiate distress sale of properties to recover arrears.
Earlier, 50 properties were taken up for auction proceedings on February 21, and the owners were called again on February 27. Following this, six property owners cleared their dues, officials said.
However, with several properties continuing to have substantial tax arrears, the corporation has decided to proceed with the auction process for the remaining properties under provisions of the Greater Bengaluru Administration Act, 2025.
Officials clarified that any property owner who clears the entire pending tax before the auction begins will be removed from the auction list. Details of the identified properties have been displayed on the notice board at the Joint Commissioner’s office.
