K C Venugopal reportedly in Switzerland during Onam

Bengaluru

All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary and Congress MP K C Venugopal was reportedly spotted in Switzerland on Wednesday, according to sources familiar with his presence in the country.

Sources who were also in Switzerland informed Blrpost.com about Venugopal’s visit and claimed that he was seen at the plush Marriott hotel. However, the exact purpose of his visit remains unclear. Sources suggested that the Congress leader could be in Switzerland as part of the Onam holidays, though this could not be independently confirmed.

This website could not independently obtain or verify any photographs of Venugopal from his reported visit to Switzerland.

The visit assumes significance against the backdrop of Venugopal’s recent political attacks on the Adani Group.

Adani, who has frequently come under attack from the Congress leadership, including Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, visited Shivakumar’s residence on August 23. The meeting had triggered considerable political discussion, particularly among Congress circles, given the party’s sustained criticism of the Adani Group.

Venugopal himself has been vocal in opposing several business dealings involving the Adani Group. His recent statements on a proposed transaction involving a Swiss-based company have also brought Switzerland into the political discourse surrounding him.

The Adani Group has initiated a proposal to sell a 49% stake in Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited (AVPPL) to the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), a Switzerland-based global container shipping major.

The proposed transaction has faced opposition from Venugopal, who has accused the Adani Group of attempting to bypass the Kerala government and alleged that the state government was being kept in the dark about the multi-billion-dollar deal.

Venugopal had recently criticised the proposed stake transfer, alleging that the Adani Group was proceeding with the transaction without adequately informing the Kerala government. His opposition has added a political dimension to the proposed restructuring of ownership in the Vizhinjam port project.

Against this backdrop, Venugopal’s reported presence in Switzerland has attracted attention, although there is currently no evidence linking his personal visit to the proposed Adani-MSC transaction.

The Congress leader, who has emerged as one of the party’s key organisational strategists and a prominent voice against the BJP-led government, has frequently targeted the Adani Group over issues relating to corporate governance, transparency and alleged proximity to the BJP.

At present, however, neither Venugopal nor the Congress party has publicly disclosed the purpose of his reported Switzerland visit. It also remains unclear whether the visit was personal, related to the Onam holiday, or connected to any official or political engagement.
