BBMP begins DPR preparation for 16 elevated corridors to ease Bengaluru’s traffic woes
Bengaluru
In a major step towards resolving the city’s perennial traffic congestion problem, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has initiated the preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for the construction of 16 elevated corridors across the city. The estimated cost of these projects stands at a staggering ₹13,000 crore, aimed at decongesting some of the city’s busiest roads.
The BBMP has entrusted the task of DPR preparation to three consultancy firms — Infra Support Engineering Consultants Pvt. Ltd., Siddhi Shakti Projects, and Nagesh Consultants. These firms are expected to submit their detailed reports within the next three months, following which the civic body plans to invite tenders and begin construction. A total of ₹24 crore has been earmarked solely for the DPR preparation process. B S Prahlad, Director(technical), B.SMILE talking to BLR.POST said the DPR is being prepared and B.SMILE will later invite tender for execution of the project.

This ambitious plan complements the state government’s previously approved twin-tunnel project, estimated at ₹17,780 crore, intended to connect Esteem Mall Junction in Hebbal to the Silk Board Junction via a 16.7 km subterranean road corridor. Tendering for this tunnel project is also in the final stages of preparation.
The elevated corridor initiative is part of BBMP’s broader strategy to improve vehicular movement by constructing flyovers and underpasses along key arterial routes of the city. Locations such as Konanakunte Cross to Banashankari via Kanakapura Road, Raghuvanahalli near Adyar Ananda Bhavan on Kanakapura Road, and the 7th Main Junction at Ragigudda along Marenahalli Main Road to NICE Road via Pipeline Road have been identified for the development of elevated road infrastructure. The tender process for these stretches was floated on January 24, specifically for DPR preparation.
Bengaluru currently ranks second in the world for traffic congestion, according to a recent global report. With a road network spanning 12,878 km within its 741 sq km area, the city struggles under the weight of more than 1.20 crore registered vehicles, besides the lakhs of vehicles that enter daily from neighbouring districts and states. Traffic bottlenecks reduce average vehicular speeds to 10–12 km per hour, forcing citizens to spend a significant portion of their day in transit.
The BBMP believes that large-scale interventions like tunnel roads, elevated corridors, and underpasses will bring long-term relief to Bengaluru’s worsening traffic problem, alongside the routine civic works handled by the municipal corporation.
