BBMP Zonal Commissioner orders swift action to improve pedestrian safety in East Zone

Bengaluru

Taking stock of the poor condition of pedestrian infrastructure in the East Zone, Zonal Commissioner Snehal conducted a detailed inspection of footpaths and roads stretching from 12th Main Road in Indiranagar to Ganapathi Enclave. The visit highlighted various issues affecting public convenience and safety, prompting immediate directives to the concerned civic agencies.

During the inspection, the Commissioner noted that damaged slab covers on roadside drains were allowing rainwater to overflow onto pedestrian pathways, posing risks to walkers during the monsoon season. She instructed officials of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to replace all broken drain covers across the zone without delay.

The footpaths in Indiranagar’s busy 100 Feet Road also came under scrutiny. Several defunct and unused electric poles were found obstructing pedestrian movement. The Commissioner ordered that these poles be removed promptly to restore clear access for the public.

Construction activities along the inspection route were found to have further inconvenienced pedestrians. Building materials stacked on footpaths at certain sites forced walkers onto the main road. Notices are set to be issued to the responsible property owners along with fines for encroaching on public space.

A major concern was the lack of a pedestrian walkway on the Domlur flyover, connecting Indiranagar to Koramangala, which has become a dangerous zone for foot traffic. As a solution, the Commissioner proposed either creating a dedicated footpath on the flyover or constructing a skywalk on Old Airport Road to ensure safe passage for commuters.

Encroachments and illegal structures on footpaths were also flagged, with orders for immediate clearance to restore public access. Road potholes, which pose a hazard to both vehicles and pedestrians, were identified and are to be filled without delay.

Safety hazards from dry, unstable trees and overhanging branches were another concern. The Commissioner directed the removal of such trees to prevent accidents during heavy rains or storms.

The inspection covered a nearly 3-kilometre stretch from Sony Signal to Ganapathi Enclave via the Domlur flyover. Instructions were issued to clear unauthorised cables and advertisement banners, repair damaged footpaths, and resolve drainage issues that cause water stagnation.
