BDA floats tenders for Hebbal tunnel, Mekhri Circle rotary flyover

Bengaluru

The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has floated tenders for a major infrastructure project aimed at improving mobility along the Hebbal–Mekhri Circle corridor, following approval from the State Cabinet earlier this month.

The project involves the construction of a 2.25-km tunnel at Hebbal Junction and a 1.7-km-long rotary flyover at Mekhri Circle. While the tunnel is estimated to cost ₹1,250 crore, the flyover is expected to cost ₹405 crore. The entire project will be funded by the BDA. Separate tenders have been issued for the tunnel and the flyover to ensure both works progress simultaneously and are completed within the stipulated timeframe.

Once completed, the project is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion on one of north Bengaluru’s busiest stretches. Officials said the initial plan was limited to a tunnel from the Hebbal flyover to the Veterinary College via the GKVK campus, but traffic police cautioned that this could shift congestion towards Mekhri Circle. “To address this, a rotary flyover has been proposed at Mekhri Circle. Vehicles exiting the tunnel can take a left towards Jayamahal Road or a right towards Sadashivanagar through the rotary,” a senior BDA official explained.

Contractors will be given a two-year deadline to complete the works, with the BDA targeting completion by early 2028. However, officials noted that challenges such as hard rock during excavation and the need for clearances to pass beneath a railway line could impact timelines. Despite this, the authority remains hopeful of completing the project by January 2028.
