Bengaluru West Corporation to accelerate sterilisation for stay dogs
Bengaluru
Commissioner of the Bengaluru West City Corporation (BWCC), K V Rajendra has directed officials to accelerate sterilisation programs for stray dogs in the city, while intensifying ongoing cleanliness campaigns across the municipal area.
Speaking at a review meeting on the progress of BWCC’s animal welfare programs and compliance with the Supreme Court’s orders on stray dog population management, Rajendra emphasised the need for enhanced operational efficiency and adherence to AWBI (Animal Welfare Board of India) standards.
The BWCC oversees a population of 63,340 community dogs. Currently, 171 dog care units operate across two ABC-ARV centers, managed by two service providers. According to the Chief Veterinary Officer, 4,068 dogs have undergone sterilisation, while 27,581 dogs have received ARV and CV vaccinations.
Rajendra instructed authorities to
- Expand the sterilisation program and facilitate participation of additional service providers through simplified tender procedures.
- Integrate long-term care unit dogs into adoption programs wherever possible.
- Identify and manage designated feeding spots for stray dogs.
- Ensure timely awareness campaigns and payment of remaining ABC-ARV program bills.
In addition, a rigorous cleanliness drive has been launched across major roads, markets, and residential areas. Officers have been directed to remove garbage piles and clear “black spots” immediately, with special attention on maintaining hygiene around Indira Canteens. Civic workers and JHIs are expected to actively supervise local operations. All waste collected within a week, including that on tractors, must be cleared and reported to the Commissioner’s office.
To maintain long-term sanitation standards, the corporation continues to implement the “Ward Cleanliness Survey Ranking” scheme, awarding star ratings based on cleanliness levels and operational efficiency every month.
