Census 2027: Houselisting in Karnataka from April 16, Online Self-Enumeration from April 1
Bengaluru, February 18:
The Karnataka government has notified that the houselisting operations for the Census of India 2027 will be conducted in the State from April 16 to May 15, 2026, in line with the schedule announced by the Centre.
According to a notification issued by the Revenue Department on February 17, the option for self-enumeration will be available from April 1 to April 15, 2026, ahead of the door-to-door houselisting exercise.
The notification follows the Central government’s order vide S.O. 99 (E) dated January 7, 2026, issued by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India, which states that the houselisting operations across the country will be carried out between April 1 and September 30, 2026. Each State and Union Territory has been asked to complete the exercise within a 30-day period of its choosing within this window.
In Karnataka, the month-long houselisting operation will involve enumerators visiting households to collect data on housing conditions, amenities and other related details. The self-enumeration facility will allow residents to submit their information online during the 15-day window prior to the field exercise.
The State government has invoked powers under Section 3 and Section 17A of the Census Act, 1948, read with relevant provisions of the Census Rules, 1990, to formally notify the schedule.
The order was issued by NARASIMHAMURTHY G.K., Under Secretary to Government, Revenue Department (Disaster Management & Services-3), by order and in the name of the Governor of Karnataka.
The houselisting phase is the first stage of the decennial Census process and precedes the population enumeration exercise.
