CM Siddaramaiah urges Centre to expedite urea supply

Bengaluru

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers, Jagat Prakash Nadda, urging immediate action to address the shortfall in urea supply to the state for the ongoing Kharif season. The Chief Minister warned that the shortage is causing significant unrest among farmers and could hamper agricultural productivity across the region.

In his letter, CM Siddaramaiah pointed out that while the Government of India had allocated 11.17 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of urea for Karnataka, only 5.17 lakh MT has been supplied so far. The state’s actual requirement for the period between April and July stands at 6.80 lakh MT, leaving a shortfall of 1.65 lakh MT.

Highlighting the urgency, the Chief Minister explained that early monsoon and timely water release in major command areas like Tungabhadra, Cauvery, and Krishna have led to a surge in sowing activities. Additionally, the area under maize cultivation — a crop with high fertiliser demand — has increased by nearly 2 lakh hectares, while 13,000 hectares of pre-kharif land has been resown.

Given the increasing fertiliser demand and disruption in supply from some companies, Siddaramaiah requested the Centre to expedite the dispatch of the pending quantity to prevent further distress among farmers.
