Dharmasthala Crimes: SIT finds ‘multiple’ skeletal remains in surprise spot

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Dharmasthala mass burial case has found ‘multiple’ skeletal remains on Monday. In a surprise move, the SIT headed by Director General of Police (DGP) Pronab Mohanty dug a different spot adding element of surprise in the investigation.

A highly placed source in the SIT talking to blrpost.com said “the team has already found multiple human skeletal remains including a skull.” This has now reinforced the confidence in Bheema who failed to pull up skeletal remains in 7,8,9 and 10. The surprise spot is at 100 feet elevation and during the operation few men sustained minor injuries. The digging is still underway.

The sources said these remains will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) immediately to determine the age, sex and cause of death. The SIT is also in possession of Unnatural Death Report (UDR) data from 1995 to 2012. Although Belthangady police had deleted the records, Mohanty’s preemptive action of collecting the data soon after the SIT was announced has come to a rescue. 

On the other hand the SIT sources said the team will welcome the locals who have filed complaints to join the digging party. The key aim of the team is to find as many bodies during this massive first-of-its kind operation in Karnataka. 

It should be noted that the State government constituted the SIT on July 19 after a former sanitation worker filed a complaint with the Dharmasthala police on July 3. The police registered the FIR on July 4. Following public outcry, the government decided to form the SIT.
