In what is seen as a sudden shift in politics, Karnataka BJP President B. Y. Vijayendra visited the family of Soujanya, who was killed in October 2012. He went directly to their house after completing a BJP rally in Dharmasthala. He was accompanied by Dakshina Kannada BJP MP, Captain Brijesh Chowta.
This move by the BJP President has raised eyebrows, as Soujanya’s family has been fighting for justice for the past 13 years. Her mother has accused an influential family from Dharmasthala of involvement in the killing of her 17-year-old daughter. Sources in the BJP said the visit may earn Vijayendra appreciation,
While the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had filed a charge sheet against Santosh Rao in the case, the court acquitted him in 2023. After this, the fight for justice for Soujanya gained fresh momentum. On July 3, a man identified as Chinnayya filed a complaint at the Dharmasthala police station, alleging he was forced to bury hundreds of bodies. He also gave a statement before the magistrate. The State government subsequently formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the allegations. Over two weeks, the SIT carried out an exhumation operation and found skeletal remains belonging to two individuals. On August 23, the SIT arrested Chinnayya for perjury and forgery of evidence.
Amid these developments, the BJP organised a rally in Dharmasthala accusing the Congress government of spreading propaganda against the Dharmasthala Temple Administration. In a surprising turn, Vijayendra visited Soujanya’s mother after the rally. The move has caused major embarrassment to D. Veerendra Heggade, the self-proclaimed Dharmadhikari of the Dharmasthala temple.
Sources close to Vijayendra said, “many people including BJP MP, Brijesh Chowta convinced Vijayendra to visit the house. He assured to bear the cost of Supreme Court petition expenses, if Soujanya’s family moves the apex court for reinvestigation.”
