Drain connectivity, encroachments in focus as civic body steps up pre-monsoon works in East Bengaluru

Bengaluru

In a push to strengthen pre-monsoon preparedness, Additional Commissioner (Development) Lokhande Snehal Sudhakar of the Bengaluru East City Corporation conducted an extensive inspection of ongoing road and infrastructure works across key stretches in the city’s eastern zone, directing officials to prioritise drainage connectivity to prevent water stagnation on roads.

Reviewing works on major, sub-arterial and ward-level roads, the official assessed project progress, quality standards, and readiness ahead of the monsoon, issuing a series of technical instructions to ensure timely completion.

Under the Chief Minister’s Infrastructure Development Programme (CMIDP), road improvement, drainage upgrades, and footpath development works are underway on the HAL Main Road to Outer Ring Road stretch. Officials were instructed to adhere strictly to deadlines. At Doddanekkundi near the Rama Temple, white-topping works taken up under the Nagarothana grant were inspected, with emphasis laid on proper curing and finishing to ensure durability.

Ward-level works in Aswath Nagar, AECS Layout—including road repairs, asphalting, and drainage improvements—are also in progress, with directions to expedite execution while maintaining quality.

A key focus of the inspection was drainage management. Officials were directed to remove footpath encroachments, undertake immediate desilting of drains, and ensure proper gradient for smooth rainwater flow. Special emphasis was placed on connecting road shoulders to drainage systems and installing gratings to prevent solid waste from clogging drains.

The inspection also flagged environmental concerns at a waste transfer point near Doddanekkundi Circle, with instructions issued for its immediate relocation due to leachate issues impacting public health.

Reiterating the corporation’s commitment to comprehensive infrastructure development, Sudhakar stressed the need for improved road quality, robust drainage systems, pedestrian safety, and effective waste management.

Senior engineering officials were present during the inspection.
