Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar has officially confirmed that five new municipal corporations will be formed under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA). This announcement puts an end to months of speculation regarding the number of corporations of Bengaluru’s urban governance structure and signals that long-awaited elections for the city’s civic bodies are on the horizon.

Speaking at the Bharat Jodo Bhavan on Tuesday during a gathering of party functionaries and Guarantee Committee leaders, Shivakumar stated, “the Greater Bengaluru Authority has already been constituted. We will go ahead with the formation of five municipal corporations under this structure. Elections to these corporations will be conducted soon.”

The Dy.CM emphasised that the move is part of a broader administrative strategy aimed at improving governance and decentralising civic management in the growing Bengaluru metropolitan region. “Some people may oppose this in public, but from an administrative point of view, it is a necessary step,” he asserted.

A committee headed by Bengaluru Central MLA Rizwan Arshad has been tasked with outlining the implementation framework for the restructuring.  Shivakumar also indicated that the creation of additional corporations would provide greater opportunities for party workers and allow better representation and service delivery at the local level. “If corporations are formed, we must ensure that our party workers get adequate positions and recognition,” he said.

The formation of multiple corporations under the GBA is expected to significantly alter the political and administrative landscape of Bengaluru. It may also lead to more focused development and governance, especially in areas currently underserved by the existing Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) structure, opined a party worker.
