Forest minister seeks full report on 82 tiger deaths in Karnataka in last five and a half years

Bengaluru

Karnataka’s Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar B Khandre has expressed shock over media reports that 82 tigers have died in the state in the last five and a half years. He has directed forest officials to submit a comprehensive report on the deaths.

The minister has written to the Additional Chief Secretary and the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), asking for details such as how many of the 82 tiger deaths were due to natural causes, how many were unnatural, and whether investigations were conducted into the unnatural deaths.

He also questioned whether the organs of any dead tigers—such as claws or teeth—were removed, and if so, whether action was taken against negligent staff or officers. The minister has sought data on how many people have been arrested in tiger poaching cases so far.

Furthermore, he asked for information on how many people have been convicted in such cases, how many cases are still under investigation, and reasons for any delays. He has instructed that the full report be submitted within 10 days.

Leopard killing reported in Male Mahadeshwara forest

In addition, Minister Khandre has ordered an inquiry into a recent incident reported in the media, where a leopard was allegedly killed near the Ramapura-Martalli border in the Kaudalli range of Male Mahadeshwara wildlife sanctuary. The leopard’s legs were reportedly severed.

The investigation will be led by a team under the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF). If the mutilation is confirmed, the minister has directed that action be recommended against the responsible officials and staff. A report on this case is to be submitted within seven days.
