Govt moves to acquire 21 acres in Anekal for 80,000-seat international cricket stadium
Bengaluru:
The State government has initiated the acquisition of nearly 21 acres of private land in Surya Nagar Stage 4 of Anekal taluk in Bengaluru Urban district, to facilitate the establishment of an international cricket stadium on city’s outskirts.
A preliminary notification issued by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) under Section 28(1) of the KIADB Act, 1966, was published in the Karnataka Gazette on Friday.
The notification lists 29 survey numbers spread across Indlavadi village, with lands proposed to be acquired for a “public purpose”.
According to the document, landowners, cultivators and other legal right-holders have been granted 30 days from the date of notification to file objections, along with supporting ownership documents, claims or statements before the Land Acquisition Officer.
Once objections are heard and examined, the government will issue a final notification, after which the lands will be taken over within 60 days.
Authorities have clarified that physical presence of landowners at the acquisition hearing is not mandatory, and that the process will continue even if parties do not appear.
The land takeover marks the first concrete step in the government’s plan to create a world-class cricket stadium in Anekal, reportedly planned with a seating capacity of around 80,000 spectators.
The project is expected to be executed in partnership with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and private stakeholders, with the aim of transforming Bengaluru’s southern region into a major sports and entertainment hub.
If materialised, the stadium will serve as a second international-grade cricket venue in Bengaluru, reducing pressure on the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and positioning the city to host larger international tournaments.
The proposed facility is also expected to catalyse infrastructure development in the Anekal–Electronic City belt, including hospitality, transport and commercial services.
The KIADB notification signals the start of the statutory land acquisition cycle, and further details regarding project timelines and execution are expected after the completion of the legal process.
