Heavy rain alert: Schools, Anganwadis shut in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi
Mangaluru
In view of the red alert issued for heavy rainfall, district administrations in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have declared a holiday for all schools and anganwadis on Thursday, June 12.
Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner M. P. Mullai Muhilan announced the closure as a precautionary measure following warnings of severe weather conditions in the region. Similarly, Udupi Deputy Commissioner K. Vidyakumari declared a holiday for educational institutions in Udupi district through an official order issued on Wednesday.
The decision comes as the southwest monsoon resumed its activity after a nearly two-week break, bringing widespread showers to various parts of Karnataka early Thursday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a seven-day forecast warning of continuous rainfall across most districts of the state till June 17.
According to the IMD, coastal districts including Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rain, accompanied by sustained wind speeds of 30 to 40 kmph. The department has also warned of the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations within these districts.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel in the affected areas.
