Historic railway line to connect Aizawl with national rail network by mid‑2025
Guwahati/Aizawl
For the first time since Independence, Aizawl—the capital of Mizoram—will be physically linked to India’s national railway network via the operationalization of the Bairabi–Sairang rail line, expected by June or July 2025.
BJP leader K. Vanlalruati announced that the initiative, launched post-2014 after the NDA government came to power, will connect Aizawl to the broad-gauge network through Bairabi, which was linked in 2016. Sairang Railway Station is being upgraded under the Amrit Bharat Scheme to handle passenger and freight traffic.
The project is part of a larger multi-modal infrastructure vision in the Northeast. Alongside the railway, major highways such as the Aizawl–Tuipang and Seling–Champhai corridors are being developed, significantly boosting connectivity with Myanmar, Bangladesh, and neighboring Indian states.
Infrastructure investments extend beyond transportation. National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has constructed over 620 km of roads at a cost of ₹13,000 crore, adding to a cumulative 1,000 km of highways across the state.
Under PM Awas Yojana, over 48,000 houses have been built; Jal Jeevan Mission has provided tap water to more than 124,000 homes. Aizawl is also undergoing a ₹513 crore development under Smart Cities Mission, according to Vanlalruati.
The BJP highlighted these achievements as evidence of development under the Modi administration, framing the railway project as a symbol of integration and regional upliftment. Beyond connectivity, the project is expected to catalyse economic activity, tourism, and cultural exchange, setting a precedent for equitable development in the Northeast.
