A newly married man and his relative allegedly died by suicide in Karnataka’s Davangere district after the man’s wife eloped with her alleged lover within three months of the wedding. Police have arrested the woman on charges of abetment of suicide.

The deceased have been identified as Harish (30) and Rudresh (36). The incident was reported from Gummanuru village in Davangere district. The accused woman, Saraswati, had reportedly eloped with a man named Kumar, with whom she was allegedly in a relationship prior to her marriage.

According to the police, Harish and Saraswati were married three months ago. A few days ago, Saraswati left the house stating that she was visiting a temple, but did not return. It later emerged that she had fled with Kumar.

Soon after learning of her disappearance, Harish died by suicide, leaving behind a death note naming those he held responsible. Police said that upon hearing of Harish’s death, Rudresh—Saraswati’s brother-in-law and the person who had arranged the marriage—also died by suicide by consuming poison at his residence.

Rudresh had played a key role in finalising the alliance and organising the wedding, believing the couple would lead a stable married life, police said.

Quoting the contents of Harish’s death note, a police officer said the deceased alleged that he was being threatened even after his wife had eloped. “He wrote that dignity and self-respect mattered more to him than money or property and urged authorities to take legal action. He named Saraswati, Ganesh and Anjeenamma as responsible for his death,” the officer said.

Police also revealed that Saraswati had approached the police station shortly after the marriage, alleging harassment by Harish and his family members. Preliminary investigations suggest that she was in a relationship with Kumar even before the wedding took place.

The Davangere rural police have registered a case and are continuing further investigation into the circumstances leading to the two deaths.
