Karnataka cabinet approves use of biodegradable carry bags
Bengaluru
The Karnataka state cabinet has approved an amendment to the 2016 notification to allow the production, storage, and sale of biodegradable carry bags, Forest, Ecology, and Environment Minister Eshwar B Khandre said on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, Minister Khandre explained that under the original 2016 notification, the production, sale, and storage of plastic carry bags, banners, buntings, flex boards, plastic plates, cups, spoons, and plastic sheets were completely banned across the state. However, with the recent invention of plant-based carry bags that decompose within 180 days, an amendment has now been made to permit their use and sale.
Khandre recalled that during a recent meeting of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, he had proposed modifying the 2016 order to incorporate the Centre’s Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021. The proposal aimed to align the state policy with national regulations while enabling eco-friendly alternatives.
The approved amendment specifically pertains to biodegradable (compostable) carry bags and certain pre-sealed plastic packaging materials that are not harmful to the environment. The decision complies with the Central Government’s 2021 directive, the minister added.
This move is seen as a step forward in promoting sustainable alternatives to plastic and reducing the environmental footprint of packaging materials in Karnataka.
