Bengaluru
Karnataka’s Minister for Large and Medium Industries, M B Patil, on Monday inaugurated the new corporate headquarters of Amazon in Yelahanka’s Vinayak Nagar in Bengaluru.
The newly constructed, state-of-the-art corporate office spans approximately 1.1 million square feet and marks a significant expansion of Amazon’s footprint in the state. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Patil stated that this is Amazon’s 10th corporate office in Karnataka, underscoring the company’s two-decade-long association with the state.
Major investment plans announced
Highlighting Amazon’s future plans, Patil said the company intends to invest $35 billion in India over the next four years. This investment is expected to benefit around 15 million small businesses and generate hundreds of thousands of employment opportunities across the country. He added that Karnataka is poised to receive a significant share of these investments and job opportunities.
Karnataka’s economic strength highlighted
The minister emphasized Karnataka’s strong economic performance, noting that the state’s per capita income has crossed ₹3.80 lakh, placing it among the top in the country. He also stated that Karnataka ranks second nationally in Goods and Services Tax (GST) contributions, paying approximately ₹1.6 lakh crore annually to the national exchequer.
Citing global recognition, Patil said Bengaluru has climbed to 21st position globally in the Global Innovation Index. Additionally, Bengaluru is the only Indian city to feature among the top 30 in the global Tech-City Index. In the previous year alone, 14.6 million square feet of industrial space in Bengaluru was leased for business operations, ranking the city first in the country.
Karnataka leads in GCC and E-Commerce infrastructure
The minister further noted that India currently hosts around 900 Global Capability Centres (GCCs), of which 35% are located in Karnataka. He added that the state leads in infrastructure supporting e-commerce operations, with warehousing facilities capable of storing 4.248 million tonnes and 233 cold storage units.
E-commerce activity in the state is growing at an annual rate of 11%, he said.
Boost to logistics and industrial ecosystem
Patil outlined several infrastructure initiatives undertaken by the state government to promote industrial growth. These include the development of dedicated freight railway corridors, multimodal logistics parks, dry ports, and truck terminals to streamline goods transportation.
He urged Amazon and other global corporations to leverage Karnataka’s industry-friendly ecosystem by increasing investments in the state. He also encouraged companies to manufacture products locally and export them to international markets from Karnataka.
Dignitaries present
The event was attended by senior executives from Amazon, including David Zapolsky, Head of Global Affairs; Chetan Krishnaswamy, Vice President; Sameer Kumar, Vice President; and Sean Lee, Vice President of Global Real Estate, among others.
