Major reshuffle in Karnataka Ranji squad; Devdutt Padikkal named captain, KL Rahul returns

Bengaluru:

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) on Sunday announced a significantly reshuffled squad for its upcoming Ranji Trophy fixture against Punjab, with Devdutt Padikkal replacing Mayank Agarwal as captain.

The changes also mark the return of senior India batter KL Rahul and India fast bowler Prasidh Krishna, strengthening Karnataka ahead of the Ranji Trophy 2025–26 match against Punjab. The four-day fixture will be played at Mohali from January 29 to February 1.

Padikkal, one of Karnataka’s most consistent red-ball performers in recent seasons, has been entrusted with the leadership role as selectors look to bring in a fresh approach. While Agarwal has been relieved of captaincy duties, he continues to be part of the squad as a senior top-order batter.

Rahul’s inclusion is a major boost for Karnataka, adding experience and stability to the batting line-up ahead of a challenging away fixture. His presence is expected to lend solidity at the top and middle order.

Prasidh Krishna’s return significantly strengthens the pace attack, with the tall seamer expected to lead the fast-bowling unit alongside Vidwath Kaverappa, Venkatesh M and Mohsin Khan.

Abhinav dropped, Karun ruled out

In a notable decision, Abhinav Manohar has been dropped from the squad following inconsistent performances. Meanwhile, experienced batter Karun Nair has been ruled out due to fitness concerns, extending his absence from Karnataka’s red-ball plans.

Apart from the headline changes, the squad features Aneesh KV, Smaran R, Shreyas Gopal, wicketkeeper Kruthik Krishna, Vidyadhar Patil and Dhruv Prabhakar. Shrijith KL has been named as the second wicketkeeping option.

The team will be coached by Yeregowda K, with Mansur Ali Khan serving as bowling coach and PV Sumanth as team manager.

The reshuffle underlines the selectors’ intent to strike a balance between experience, form and fitness as Karnataka look to strengthen their Ranji Trophy campaign.
