Minister Eshwar Khandre directs crackdown on PoP Ganesha idol trade
Bengaluru
Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar B Khandre has directed strict measures to curb the stockpiling, transportation, and sale of Plaster of Paris (PoP) Ganesh and Gauri idols coated with toxic chemical paints, and instead promote the production and use of eco-friendly clay idols free from harmful colors. His instruction to officials come ahead of Ganesha festivities in August.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Minister Khandre said that PoP idols are made using calcium sulfate hemihydrate powder and often include hazardous elements like sulfur, dyes, gypsum, and magnesium. The chemical paints applied to these idols can contain mercury, cadmium, lead, and carbon. When such idols are immersed in lakes, ponds, or rivers, the heavy metals dissolve into the water, harming aquatic life and posing serious health risks to humans and animals.
The Minister said that his department has already issued directions to raise public awareness about the environmental damage caused by these idols. He noted that in previous years, circulars were issued banning the manufacture, storage, and sale of PoP idols. After assuming office in 2023, his ministry issued a formal government order prohibiting the production and sale of such idols.
With the Gauri-Ganesh festival about a month away, Khandre has instructed officials to take immediate steps to control the transport and stocking of PoP idols from now onwards. He also emphasised the need for strict enforcement of the ban by local bodies.
Furthermore, the Minister has directed officials to engage with resident welfare associations (RWAs) in high-rise buildings, apartment complexes, and various localities to encourage their members to use only eco-friendly idols during the upcoming festival.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable practices during religious festivities.
