MM Hills may become new Tiger Reserve: Minister Eshwar Khandre calls for public feedback
Bengaluru
Forest, Ecology, and Environment Minister Eshwar B Khandre has directed officials to begin collecting public opinion on declaring the Male Mahadeshwara Hills (M M Hills) Wildlife Sanctuary as a Tiger Reserve, following a notable increase in the tiger population in the region.
It may also be recalled that five tigers – one tigress and four cubs died at the M M Hills due to suspected poisoning. The forest department is currently probing the reasons for the death.
Chairing a high-level meeting at Vikasa Soudha with senior forest department officials, including the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden, the Minister stressed the importance of moving ahead with the declaration process. He instructed officials to consult all stakeholders and submit a formal proposal.
Centralised command centre for wildlife protection
Highlighting the challenges of monitoring Karnataka’s vast 40,000 sq. km forest area, Khandre proposed a centralised command centre to combat poaching, deforestation, and illegal encroachments. He emphasised the use of modern technology like AI-based systems, drones, and CCTV surveillance at forest fringes to monitor both wildlife and suspicious activities. The command centre would receive live feeds to track animal movements and prevent illegal hunting.
Accountability and prevention of human-wildlife conflict
To curb unusual wildlife deaths and human casualties from wild animal attacks, the minister ordered district-level accountability for officers and staff. He called for preemptive safety measures in vulnerable zones to ensure the protection of both people and animals.
Filling vacancies and resource allocation
Khandre also directed the department to list all vacant positions and begin the recruitment process immediately. He permitted temporary contractual appointments where urgently needed and called for proposals to procure vehicles and equipment essential for forest and wildlife conservation.
Build trust with forest fringe communities
Stressing the importance of community cooperation, the Minister advised forest officials to foster friendly relations with people living near forests. He urged outreach efforts to educate locals on the importance of forests and wildlife, and suggested initiatives like talent recognition programs and skill development training for children and youth in those areas. “When people understand and feel involved, they themselves become protectors of nature,” he said.
