The long-awaited multi-level Car Parking facility at Gandhi Bazaar in Chickpet is ready and will soon be opened for public use. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao said this during his inspection of South Zone development works on Friday.
Constructed under the Smart City initiative, the facility has been completed, and Rao has directed officials to coordinate with the Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister, D K Shivakumar to finalise the date for inauguration.
Built at a cost of ₹22 crore, the parking complex features 50 commercial shops on the ground and first floors. The parking structure, spanning from the first to the fourth floors, can accommodate up to 124 cars—31 per floor. The building includes an elevator, six toilets, staircases, and a tensile-roofing terrace.
During the inspection of Gandhi Bazaar Main Road and Circle, Rao commended the area’s transformation, citing the installation of granite cobblestones, bollards on footpaths, and white-topping of roads as significant improvements.
In a bid to improve aesthetics and order, vendors along Gandhi Bazaar Road have been assigned specific zones and must operate strictly within them. Encroachment beyond these limits will lead to action. Rao also instructed officials to ban footpath parking and implement standardized umbrellas for all vendors, with a design review underway.
Rao stressed that the waste processing unit in Koramangala should be developed as a model facility. It includes a biogas plant, a mini transfer station, a dry waste collection center, and a material recovery facility. Officials were instructed to maintain the unit well and control odors through regular spraying. The facility will also be prepared to host training and study visits.
Officials were directed to identify dedicated spaces in each zone for collecting reusable household items such as furniture and cots. Systems must be put in place to streamline the collection and delivery of these items to the designated points.
During a visit to the vacant land near the Banashankari bus stop and BMRCL parking area, Rao instructed officials to develop the space for accommodating street vendors operating nearby.
