Greater Bengaluru Authority proposes flyover at Iblur, to help Bellandur-bound vehicles

Bengaluru

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has proposed the construction of an additional flyover at Iblur Junction on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) as part of a larger plan to address chronic traffic congestion along the city’s busiest IT corridor.

GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao, during a joint inspection of the ORR stretch from Silk Board Junction to K.R. Puram on Monday, directed officials to prepare a detailed blueprint for the proposed flyover, stressing the need for time-bound execution using modern construction methods.

The inspection was carried out with officials from B-SMILE, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), and the East and South City Corporations.

Officials indicated that an approximately 800-metre-long flyover would be required at Iblur Junction to ease traffic heading towards Bellandur from Agara. Rao instructed departments to submit a comprehensive plan detailing project cost, construction model and completion timelines.

The Chief Commissioner said the entire ORR stretch between Silk Board and K.R. Puram is being taken up for integrated development under GBA’s supervision, covering main carriageways, service roads, footpaths and junction redesign. He emphasised close coordination between civic agencies and Metro authorities to avoid duplication of works and ensure consistency in design and execution.

At Silk Board Junction, Rao directed officials to undertake comprehensive redevelopment in coordination with the South City Corporation and BMRCL, including installation of High-Density Reinforced Precast Concrete (HRPC) structures, flood-mitigation measures and allied infrastructure. With Metro pile-cap works currently underway at the junction, officials were instructed to fast-track construction while minimising disruption to traffic.

Rao also called for early finalisation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for ORR development, aimed at improving traffic flow through better road geometry, upgraded service roads and pedestrian infrastructure. As Metro-related footpath and median works are already in progress, BMRCL and B-SMILE were asked to align their works with the DPR.

Raising concerns over uneven road surfaces beneath Metro stations along the ORR, Rao noted that pile-cap construction has narrowed road widths at several locations, increasing the risk of congestion. He instructed officials to inspect all Metro stations along the corridor and immediately rectify deficiencies.

Directions were also issued to complete footpath works near Iblur Metro Station towards Silk Board, where a two-kilometre stretch was found to be poorly maintained or incomplete. Near Kodibisanahalli Metro Station, officials were asked to widen the area around a narrow stormwater drain and construct proper footpaths to facilitate smoother traffic movement.

The Chief Commissioner further instructed the City Corporation and Traffic Police to jointly survey the ORR and submit a list of locations requiring pedestrian skywalks, along with design specifications and estimated funding requirements.

Other key directions included expediting land acquisition for a proposed flyover near Hoodi Circle, widening the ITPL Main Road after taking over properties with relinquishment deeds, completing pending double-decker road works by the end of February, and implementing a pay-and-park system near New Horizon Metro Station to curb illegal parking.

Senior officials from GBA, the City Corporations, BMRCL, Traffic Police and allied departments were present during the inspection.
