Tamannaah for Mysore Sandal: M.B. Patil slams BJP over silence on KSDL scandals

Bengaluru

Minister for Large and Medium Industries, M.B. Patil took aim at BJP leaders on Monday, accusing them of hypocrisy in their recent comments about Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL). Reacting to the BJP’s criticism over the appointment of actress Tamannaah Bhatia as KSDL’s brand ambassador, Patil questioned the party’s silence during major corruption scandals that rocked the company under its rule.

“These same BJP leaders, who are now talking about preserving KSDL’s legacy, were nowhere to be seen when massive irregularities took place under their leadership,” Patil said. He specifically referred to the tenure of BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa, who was arrested on corruption charges while serving as the company’s chairman. “Why didn’t BJP President, B.Y. Vijayendra spoke about the scams then? Was he unaware—or was he complicit?” Patil asked pointedly.

Patil emphasised that Tamannaah’s appointment was a strategic business move, not a political one. “A professional committee evaluated several options before selecting her. Many other celebrities were considered, but contractual obligations with rival brands ruled them out,” he clarified.

Highlighting the progress under the current Congress government, Patil said KSDL has seen a turnaround. “With the same infrastructure and staff, we’ve ramped up production and returned the company to profitability,” he said, adding that BJP leaders had remained indifferent when KSDL was in financial distress.

He also addressed the initial backlash against Tamannaah’s appointment. “Some group leaders who had opposed the decision later reached out to express support after understanding the rationale. They admitted they were not fully informed earlier,” he noted.

Patil revealed that 23 new products have been added to KSDL’s portfolio, and the company is gearing up to introduce dishwashing solutions and perfumes to broaden its market presence.

Turning to Mysore Sales International Limited (MSIL), Patil outlined a broader reform agenda. “We’re introducing digital systems and planning to boost MSIL’s annual turnover to Rs 10,000 crore by 2030,” he said. The MSIL stationery division, once dormant, has also been revived, including the relaunch of the popular ‘Lekhak’ notebook line.
