The Hindu office to shift to Lavelle Road as old building set for demolition

Bengaluru

The Bengaluru office of The Hindu is set to relocate to a new address on Lavelle Road, marking the end of an era for its long-standing premises on Bhagawan Mahaveer Road (formerly Infantry Road). The existing building, which has served as the newspaper’s Karnataka headquarters for decades, is slated for demolition as part of a major redevelopment plan.

Sources within the organisation informed blrpost.com that the relocation is likely to take place in April, with staff expected to move to a new office space at Prestige Emerald on Lavelle Road. The shift, however, is understood to be temporary. A new and modern multi-storeyed structure is proposed to be constructed at the Mahaveer Road site, following which the staff are expected to return upon completion of the project.

Editorial, marketing, advertising and other administrative departments will function from Prestige Emerald, located in one of the most prominent stretches of the Central Business District (CBD). According to sources, the construction of the new building may take over three years.

Owned by Kasturi and Sons Limited, The Hindu management has reportedly decided to redevelop its prime property and enter the real-estate segment through the construction of a commercial complex. The management is said to have entered into an agreement with a real-estate developer for the project. While a portion of the proposed building will house the newspaper’s operations, the remaining space is expected to be leased out.

The Mahaveer Road building carries considerable historical significance. Established in 1970, it marked a milestone in the newspaper’s expansion, as the launch of the Bengaluru edition became the first time The Hindu was printed outside its original base in Madras (now Chennai), symbolising its growth beyond Tamil Nadu.
