Unauthorised activities at Puttenahalli Lake: BBMP issues notice to vacate and remove illegal boards
Bengaluru
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has issued a stern notice on July 10 regarding unauthorised activities being carried out at Puttenahalli Lake, located in the Bommanahalli Assembly Constituency. The notice was issued to Puttenahalli Neighbourhood Lake Improvement Trust (PNLIT).
According to the notice issued by the Executive Engineer of BBMP’s Lakes Division, Puttenahalli Lake was officially handed over to BBMP by the state government through order number 188/172/800/2007 dated March 28, 2008. Following this, lake development works were initiated and managed under specific agreements.
An MoU had been signed on May 17, 2017, between BBMP’s Lakes Division and a private entity for the maintenance of the lake for a three-year period. However, that agreement expired on May 17, 2020. Despite the expiration, the private party is said to have continued to deploy workers at the lake and carry out operations without obtaining renewed authorisation from BBMP.

The BBMP further alleged that the unauthorised group has been dumping cut trees and branches at the lake, impacting its cleanliness and ecological balance. Based on the directions from the Special Commissioner (Solid Waste Management and Lakes) and the Zonal Commissioner of Bommanahalli Zone, BBMP has warned against any further illegal activities at the site.
The notice also instructed the immediate removal of unauthorised display boards installed in the lake premises. BBMP has cautioned that any violations of these orders will invite appropriate legal action. The PNLIT in its press release said “it is with a heavy heart that we inform you that PNLIT has withdrawn from protecting and nurturing Puttenahalli Puttakere from 03 July 2025. We were issued a notice to do so by the Lakes Division, BBMP. It will come as a shock to you, our associates, well-wishers and supporters, but we had been trying to diffuse and avert a showdown for the last two years.”
