Lifeguards and locals rescued the tourists at Gangolli Beach
Five tourists rescued by lifeguards at Udupi’s Gangolli beach
In a dramatic incident near Gangolli Beach in Udupi district on Sunday evening, five tourists—including four from Bengaluru and a woman from Goa—were saved from powerful sea waves thanks to the swift efforts of beach lifeguards.
The tourists had ventured too close to the surf while capturing photographs when they were suddenly caught in strong currents and dragged towards deeper water. Alert lifeguards immediately intervened, launching a timely rescue that prevented a potential tragedy.
Lifeguards Prithviraj Uppunda and Pramod Raj Uppunda spearheaded the rescue operation, aided by beach supervisor Suresh Koderi. They were supported on-site by Ibrahim Gangolli, leader of the ambulance team.
Following the rescue, local Gangolli police and Highway Patrol officers responded promptly, sounding sirens and issuing warnings to all beach visitors to maintain a safe distance from the water’s edge.
Ibrahim Gangolli emphasised the importance of their readiness: “The tourists were lucky we were nearby installing safety nets.”
