Karnataka Notifies Creation of Five New City Corporations in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Sept. 2: The Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024 paved the way for the creation of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) — a supervisory body meant to oversee and coordinate governance across the metropolitan region. The GBA will function somewhat like a parent authority, ensuring citywide planning, infrastructure, and policy implementation, while delegating day-to-day civic responsibilities to smaller, more manageable corporations.

Under this framework, the state government has now split the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) into five city corporations:

  • Bengaluru West City Corporation
  • Bengaluru South City Corporation
  • Bengaluru North City Corporation
  • Bengaluru East City Corporation
  • Bengaluru Central City Corporation

The boundaries of each new civic body have been detailed in the notification, published in the Karnataka Gazette on September 2, 2025. The reorganisation follows the government’s July 19, 2025 proposal, which had been opened for public objections and suggestions. After due consideration of the responses, the government has gone ahead with the restructuring.

Officials said the move is aimed at decentralising governance, improving service delivery, and addressing the administrative challenges of managing a rapidly growing metropolis. Each corporation will function independently within its notified jurisdiction while remaining under the overarching framework of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA).

Each corporation will have its own mayor, council, and administrative machinery, allowing for decentralised decision-making and more localized delivery of civic services such as waste management, road maintenance, health, and water supply.

The changes come into effect immediately with the government publishing the final notification in the Gazette.

The order was signed by Nandakumar B., Under Secretary to Government, Urban Development Department (BBMP-2 and Coordination), in the name of the Governor of Karnataka.
