Public consultation on lake buffer zone reduction today at press club

Bengaluru

Concerned citizens, environmental experts, and activists will gather this evening at the Bengaluru Press Club, Cubbon Park, for a public consultation on the Karnataka government’s proposal to reduce lake buffer zones. The event, organised under the banner of Bengaluru TownHall, aims to examine the potential dangers and long-term implications of the move, particularly for a city that has already lost nearly 95% of its wetlands.

The session will begin at 4:00 PM with an introduction and context setting by actor-cum-activist, Prakash Belawadi, followed by a series of expert presentations. V.R. Hegde will speak on “Lakes, Environment & Future,” highlighting the ecological significance of urban water bodies. Shyam Prasad will address “Buffer Zones in Urban Hydrology,” explaining their role in flood control and water conservation. T.V. Ramachandra will follow with a talk on “Ecological Outcomes,” analysing the environmental fallout of shrinking buffer zones.

An open house and discussion on possible future steps will also take place providing citizens an opportunity to voice their concerns and suggestions.

Organisers say the consultation is intended to equip the public with a deeper understanding of the proposed legislation and its potential impact on Bengaluru’s environment. The discussion is expected to explore scientific, ecological, and policy dimensions before deciding on collective action.

The event is open to all residents, with the organisers urging strong citizen participation to protect the city’s remaining lakes and wetlands. Further details are available at linktree.com/BengaluruTownHall.
