Major Boost to Emergency Care: NIMHANS to Get 300-Bed Trauma Centre
New Delhi/Bengaluru: The BJP-led Union Government has granted in-principle approval for the construction of a state-of-the-art NIMHANS Post Graduate and 300-bedded Poly Trauma Centre in Bengaluru. The facility, with an estimated cost of ₹498 crore, aims to strengthen India’s emergency and trauma care infrastructure.
According to an official memorandum issued by the Department of Expenditure under the Union Ministry of Finance, the approval follows a proposal from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
The project will be established under the aegis of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), one of India’s premier medical institutions.
The new trauma centre is expected to not only handle emergency and serious injury cases but also provide services for regular patients. This directive aligns with NITI Aayog’s 2021 recommendations to enhance manpower, infrastructure, and medical supply availability for emergency care in secondary and tertiary centres.
The Ministry has laid out several key conditions for the project:
- Resource Optimization: MoHFW must ensure optimal use of manpower, infrastructure, and medical supplies.
- Inclusive Care: The centre should cater to both emergency trauma and general patients.
- Institutional Branding: Branding should reflect a broader scope beyond emergency care.
- Performance Monitoring: The centre’s outcomes will be regularly reviewed for effectiveness and course corrections, if needed.
- Policy Framework: The Health Ministry has been urged to draft a comprehensive medium and long-term policy vision for trauma and emergency care in India.
Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya termed the approval “a major step in making Bengaluru a medical hub and strengthening the city’s healthcare infrastructure. “The approval for the project reflects Modi 3.0’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare & citizen-first governance,” he said on a X post.
