‘Model pedestrian path to be developed along Bannerghatta Main Road’

Bengaluru

In a step towards improving pedestrian infrastructure in the city, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao has directed officials to develop a model pedestrian pathway along the Bannerghatta Main Road metro corridor.

During a 5.5-kilometer inspection walk from Dairy Circle to IIMB (Indian Institute of Management–Bangalore), Rao, accompanied by BBMP officials, reviewed several civic concerns including footpath conditions, potholes, sanitation, and public transport access.

The pink line of the metro currently under construction along Bannerghatta Road will have its adjoining footpaths standardised and upgraded, he said. Damaged slabs and curb stones must be repaired, and inconsistencies in footpath heights need to be corrected to ensure uniformity.

Enhancing last-mile connectivity

The commissioner emphasised that well-maintained pedestrian infrastructure is key to improving last-mile connectivity to metro stations and bus stops. He instructed officials to clear any encroachments on footpaths to provide smooth and safe passage for pedestrians, ultimately encouraging increased use of public transportation.

New bus stops to be constructed

Highlighting the absence of proper bus shelters along parts of Bannerghatta Road, Rao instructed officials to construct bus bays and bus stops wherever road width allows. This move is expected to improve commuter convenience and public transport efficiency.

Action against garbage dumping

The BBMP will also address the issue of garbage dumping at designated “black spots” along the road. Rao stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness near road grates to ensure smooth rainwater drainage, and warned of fines for littering.

Grating installation over stormwater drains

Special attention was given to pedestrian safety near IIM-Bangalore, where a stormwater drain is present. The commissioner directed the installation of metal gratings over the drain to facilitate safe walking.

BBMP South Zone Commissioner Digvijay Bodke, Chief Engineer Basavaraj Kabade, and other executive engineers were also present during the inspection. This initiative is part of a broader BBMP effort to create pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and support sustainable urban mobility across Bengaluru.
