Dharmasthala Crimes: SIT questions Bheema’s brother, ‘knows more about mass burial’

Bengaluru

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Dharmasthala mass burial case has questioned Bheema’s brother multiple times, sources in the Home Ministry told blrpost.com. His brother reportedly has more knowledge about the mass burial sites and a better memory of the locations.

The investigation team first questioned him last week, and on Tuesday, some officers met him again at the residence where he is currently staying. This news website is withholding his name to avoid revealing Bheema’s actual identity. Initially, Bheema’s brother spoke about the burial of post-mortem bodies.

It should be noted that apart from the ongoing exhumation operations, the SIT is also questioning several people connected to the case. Bheema has already recorded his statement before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). Such statements are admissible as evidence in a court of law and cannot be retracted, unlike voluntary statements made to the police.

Sources say Bheema’s brother continues to live in fear. During his first interrogation, he spoke about post-mortem bodies, but SIT has since learned that he also knows about burial sites where bodies were interred without autopsies. Sources close to Bheema believe his assistance could help the SIT exhume more remains.

They further point out that Bheema and his brother interact regularly, but the brother feels Bheema is not indicating the exact spots. The 11(A) or 14th site—where skeletal remains of one person were found—was allegedly identified by Bheema based on his brother’s information. His brother is believed to know several more burial locations. It remains to be seen whether SIT will formally involve him in the search for accuracy or simply monitor his activities.

The State government formed the SIT on July 19 after a former sanitation worker of the Dharmasthala Temple Administration filed a police complaint on July 3, alleging he had been forced to bury hundreds of bodies. The SIT’s exhumation operations are ongoing.

  1. Hats off to SIT for serving truth and not power. People have gained hope for justice for the victims, and it is unimaginable to think of the torture they must have endured before they die.
