Bengaluru expands to 368 wards; Outer constituencies emerge as biggest gainers
City’s outer areas — which are fast developing — have finally received the representation they deserve.
In the recently concluded delimitation exercise, assembly constituencies such as KR Puram, Mahadevapura, Bommanahalli, and Bangalore South have got the highest number of wards compared to Bengaluru’s core areas, where development and population growth have been stagnant.
Overall, Bengaluru’s five corporations will now have a total of 368 wards, a significant increase from the existing 198 wards.

The delimitation of wards was carried out by a four-member team headed by M. Maheshwar Rao, Chief Commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority. The team completed the exercise in a record time of just twenty days.

Constituencies such as Shivajinagar, Yelahanka, and Dasarahalli have the fewest number of wards. This is primarily because Shivajinagar is smaller in size compared to other assembly segments. While there is also very little economic activity in Dasarahalli, a large part of the Yelahanka assembly segment falls outside the GBA limits.
The number of wards in constituencies such as CV Raman Nagar, Chamarajpet, Chickpet, Gandhinagar, Shantinagar, and Pulakeshinagar has more or less remained the same.
Interestingly, the government has split some constituencies across different corporations and wards, possibly for political reasons, as reported by some sections of the media. RR Nagar, for instance, now falls under the Bengaluru City West Corporation, Bengaluru City North Corporation, and Bengaluru City South Corporation.
Yeshwanthpur and Mahadevapura too come under two corporations, though the reasons are not likely to be political alone. For instance, Bellandur has been brought under Bengaluru South City Corporation keeping revenue of the corporation in mind.
Documents show that Padmanabhanagar also falls under both the South and West corporations. This is said to be at the request of a prominent BJP politician who reportedly wanted influence over two corporations, according to media reports.
