FIR registered against RCB over stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium

A case has been registered against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), event management firm DNA Networks, and others in connection with the tragic stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed eleven lives and left several others injured.

The FIR was filed suo motu by the Cubbon Park Police and includes charges under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shekar H Tekkannavar confirmed the development, stating that the case involves allegations of criminal negligence.

The FIR invoked various sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) including Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), Section 125(12) (acts endangering life or personal safety of others), Section 142 (unlawful assembly), Section 121 (abetment of an offence), and Section 190 (liability of members of an unlawful assembly for offences committed in pursuit of a common object).

The stampede occurred on Wednesday, June 4 during a public event organised to celebrate the RCB team’ historic Indian Premier League (IPL) title win. In the tragic stampede 11 people were killed and more than 70 were injured.

Authorities are now investigating the role of each party in the organisation and management of the event, as questions mount over lapses in planning and crowd control that led to the deadly incident.
