Government to set up lake committees to study encroachment, pollution in Bengaluru
In a move aimed at restoring and protecting Bengaluru’s lakes, Deputy Chief Minister (Dy.CM) and Bengaluru Development Minister D K Shivakumar on Wednesday directed the formation of three dedicated lake study committees. These panels will be led by Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) T.A. Sharavana, Javarayi Gowda, and Gopinath.
The directive was issued during the first quarterly KDP (Karnataka Development Program) meeting for 2025-26, held at the Bengaluru District Panchayat hall in Banashankari.
The committees will study key issues such as lake encroachments and sewage inflow. “These committees must survey the current state of lakes across the city, report on encroachments and pollution sources, and suggest corrective action,” said Shivakumar.
He emphasised that action must be taken without hesitation against anyone—individuals or industries—who discharge sewage or engage in illegal activities harming the lakes. “If we don’t act now to preserve the lakes, we will face serious consequences in the future,” he warned officials.
