Dharmasthala Crimes: Union Home Ministry transfers mass burial complaint to Counter-Terrorism division

New Delhi

In a significant development, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has forwarded a high-profile grievance concerning Dharmasthala mass burial case and women going missing from temple town to its Counter-Terrorism and Counter-Radicalisation (CTCR) division for review.

The matter is now being handled by Abhijit Sinha, Additional Secretary, who is overseeing the case as lead officer in the CTCR wing at North Block, New Delhi. The grievance was filed on August 2 and the same was transferred on August 4. Currently the complaint is under process.

Screen grab of the grievance

The grievance, officially filed through the Central Government’s online portal, requests the transfer of the investigation to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), citing international implications under SAARC treaty provisions. It accuses top Karnataka ministers —including the Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister, D K Shivakumar and Home Minister G Parameshwara of obstructing the probe and shielding key suspects. The blrpost.com will not be naming the complainant for his protection.

The complainant emphasises that although senior officers such as Director General of Police (DGP) Pronab Mohanty and IPS M N Anucheth  are trustworthy, they remain powerless due to systemic interference from compromised local institutions, including segments of the police and medical departments who are part of the Special Investigation Team (SIT)

The grievance highlights growing international attention to the case, referencing a report by Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post (SCMP). It warns that failure to act decisively could damage India’s global reputation, particularly given the involvement of minors and the possible cross-border ramifications.

The complainant talking to the reporter of this website said “either NIA should probe this matter or it should assist the SIT in the ongoing probe. The original complaint filed by Bheema at Dharmasthala police station looks like its a genocide. The union government should not protect the temple administration.” The complainant further said NIA DG Sadanand Date has impeccable service records and is the right person to look into the case.

The complainant also noted the remarks of Julio Ribeiro which says “Sadanand Date has functioned as a senior police officer in very difficult times, when loyalty to the party in power takes precedence over loyalty to the Constitution and the law. My generation of officers were not asked to do that. The community to which he belongs was known for its adherence to truth and justice, for its value system, for a simple living but high thinking. Sadanand has encompassed in his personality all those traits. He overcame poverty as a child and cracked the UPSC examination to enter the august portals of the IPS,” The combination of NIA DG and SIT DG will help bring out of the truth, he added.

The case remains under preliminary review at the CTCR division. A decision on whether the NIA will officially take over the probe is awaited.

It must be noted the SIT formed on July 19 is conducting an exhumation operation and found skeletal remains. On Thursday, SIT is likely to carry out a survey first before commencing digging.
