Bengaluru Central Corporation to collect stray dog data from public and private schools

Bengaluru

The Bengaluru Central City Corporation has initiated an extensive data-collection exercise on stray dogs across all major public and private institutions, following directives issued under the Supreme Court’s Suo Motu Writ Petition (Civil) No. 5/2025 and instructions from the State Chief Secretary.

Addressing a meeting of senior officials at the Public Utility Building on M.G. Road, City Corporation Commissioner Rajendra Cholan ordered immediate action to gather detailed information on stray dog presence within schools, colleges, hospitals, government departments, semi-government bodies, railway and bus stations, depots, playgrounds, and parks across the civic limits.

Nodal officers to be appointed across all institutions

Commissioner Cholan directed officials to formally communicate with every institution—government and private—mandating the appointment of a nodal officer responsible for compiling stray dog data on their premises. Corporation staff will coordinate directly with these nodal officers to ensure timely submission of information.

Constituency-level supervision

To streamline the process, Executive Engineers of each division have been designated as constituency-level nodal officers. They will supervise data collection through their field staff and ensure that notices are promptly issued to all institutional heads, including educational institutions, government departments, and transport hubs.

Commissioner Cholan instructed Joint Commissioners and Chief Engineers to take “greater responsibility” in consolidating the data and forwarding comprehensive reports to the Additional Commissioner (Development).

The review meeting was attended by Additional Commissioner (Development) Daljit Kumar; Joint Commissioners Ranganath and Hemant Sharan; Chief Engineers Vijaykumar Haridas and Suguna; Health Officer Shivakumar; Assistant Directors of Animal Husbandry Dr. M.H. Reddy and Dr. Basavaraj; along with Executive Engineers and Veterinary Officers.

The initiative marks one of the most extensive civic efforts to document stray dog populations in the city, aligning with ongoing legal and administrative directives.
