Confident Group chairman Roy Chiriankandath Joseph, widely known as C J Roy, allegedly died by suicide after shooting himself at his Langford Road office in Bengaluru on Friday. Sources said officials from the Income Tax department were present at the premises when the incident occurred.

The incident took place in the afternoon at the office-cum-residence. A senior police officer said Roy is suspected to have used a licensed pistol that he possessed. He was immediately shifted to a nearby private hospital and later taken to Narayana Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Roy headed Confident Group, one of Kerala’s prominent real estate firms with a presence across India and overseas. He was known for running what he described as a zero-debt business model, executing large-scale projects without relying on bank loans.

According to information available on the Confident Group’s official website, the 19-year-old conglomerate has diversified business interests spread across India, the UAE and the United States. The group claims to have successfully designed and delivered 159 real estate projects across Bengaluru, Kerala and Dubai, with none stalled due to legal, financial or governmental hurdles. Some of its projects have also received CRISIL 7-star ratings.

Beyond real estate, Roy was active in the film industry as a producer. He made his debut with the big-budget Malayalam film Casanova in 2012 and later co-produced Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea starring Mohanlal in 2021. In 2024, he produced Identity, featuring actor Tovino Thomas. He was also associated with television productions and sponsorships.

Roy was known for his fondness for luxury automobiles and for supporting various social welfare initiatives. Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death.
