Major political shift likely in Assam: D K Shivakumar

Deputy Chief Minister (Dy.CM) and Bengaluru Development Minister D K Shivakumar on Saturday claimed that the northeastern state is headed for a “major change” amid rising public dissatisfaction and internal turmoil within the ruling party.

Speaking to reporters near the Kempegowda International Airport before departing for campaign duties, Shivakumar alleged that corruption has increased in Assam, leaving citizens distressed and disillusioned. He said that the promises made during the last elections have largely remained unfulfilled, contributing to growing public anger.

Shivakumar, who is travelling to Assam as part of election campaigning efforts, also indicated that his schedule includes visits to Kerala and overseeing upcoming by-elections in Karnataka. He asserted that governance in Assam has weakened over the past decade, resulting in stagnation in development and prompting voters to seek an alternative.

Further, the Dy.CM pointed to increasing factionalism within the Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam, particularly after a recent cabinet reshuffle. He claimed that internal dissatisfaction has intensified, with several party members feeling sidelined and discontented due to lack of opportunities.

According to Shivakumar, these factors collectively indicate a shifting political landscape in Assam, where voters may be inclined to bring about a significant electoral change in the near future.
