New Delhi
At least eight people were killed and several others injured after a powerful explosion ripped through a car parked near the Red Fort on Monday evening, leaving multiple vehicles ablaze and shattering windows in the congested area.
According to Delhi Police, senior officers reached the site to assess the situation, while authorities have sounded a high alert across the capital. Seven fire tenders were rushed to the location, and the area around the blast has been cordoned off.
“The blast occurred in a car parked near Red Fort Metro Station, gate number 1. The intensity was high, and injuries are feared,” a senior official of the Delhi Fire Service said according to The Hindu report.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as flames engulfed several vehicles. One injured bystander, who sustained a forehead wound, said the explosion seemed to have originated from a Swift car parked nearby. Another witness recalled hearing a deafening sound while at a gurdwara, with nearby vehicles completely damaged.
Sanjay Bhargaw, president of the Chandni Chowk Traders Association, whose shop is around 800 metres from the site, said the blast shook entire buildings and triggered chaos in the market. Authorities are investigating the incident, and further details are awaited.
