Bengaluru South MP, Tejasvi Surya

Tejasvi Surya compares Bengaluru metro to Moscow’s, slams high fares and lack of transparency

Drawing a stark comparison with Moscow’s world-renowned metro system, Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya has criticised the Bengaluru Metro for its inefficiency, high fares, and lack of commuter-centric planning.

“Moscow Metro runs at an 80-second frequency, covers the city with dense radial lines, costs a fraction, and every station is a work of art,” Surya said, urging Bengaluru Metro to learn from global best practices. He emphasised that public transport is not just about moving people, but also about ambition, aesthetics, and respect for commuters — qualities he claimed are currently missing in Bengaluru’s metro experience. Surya also posted a video on X (formerly twitter) on Moscow’s metro infrastructure.

The BJP MP expressed strong dissatisfaction over Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) continued silence on fare-related decisions, stating he had once again urged the Managing Director of the BMRCL to make the fare fixation committee report public.

“Why are you not making it public? What is it that you want to hide? It certainly isn’t a document of national security implications that it can’t be made public,” Surya remarked in his post, questioning the rationale behind what he called “steep” ticket prices.

Calling for affordable and efficient urban transport, Surya argued that public systems like metro rail should be the cheapest and most practical mobility option for city residents. His comments come amid ongoing public debates over Bengaluru Metro’s pricing and accessibility, as the city expands its network.
