Gas shortage sparks fear of illegal tree felling; Khandre issues alert to Forest officials

Bengaluru, March 12:

Amid concerns that the ongoing conflict in West Asia could lead to a shortage of cooking gas and increase demand for firewood, Karnataka Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar B. Khandre has directed forest officials to remain on high alert to prevent illegal tree felling.

In a written instruction to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force, the Minister said the gas supply disruption is beginning to affect Karnataka as well, raising fears that people may turn to firewood.

He noted that hotels, resorts and homestays are already facing difficulties in obtaining commercial LPG cylinders, while disruptions in domestic cooking gas supply have also been reported. In this situation, officials have been instructed to intensify patrols and surveillance to ensure that trees are not illegally cut in forests, forest fringes or government land for firewood.

Mr. Khandre has directed all forest circles and divisions to step up vigilance and preventive measures. He warned that if illegal felling occurs in forest areas or government land, the officials and staff of the concerned jurisdiction will be held responsible.
