GBA urges residents to cooperate as Census Phase I begins today

Bengaluru, April 16: The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) on Wednesday issued a public notice calling on residents, property owners, apartment associations and managements to extend full cooperation to officials as Phase I of the National Census commences from April 16.

According to the authority, authorised enumerators, supervisors and designated officers will begin visiting apartment complexes and residential premises across the Greater Bengaluru area to collect household and demographic data as part of the nationwide exercise.

The GBA has requested all stakeholders to ensure smooth access for officials and to provide accurate and complete information during the enumeration process. “Facilitating entry to premises and cooperating with officials will be crucial for timely and efficient data collection,” the notice said.

The authority also reminded citizens that furnishing information for census purposes is mandatory under the Census Act, 1948. Refusal to share details or obstruction of officials could invite penal action under the law, it warned.

Emphasising the importance of the exercise, the GBA said public participation would play a key role in ensuring the success of the census, which forms the basis for planning, resource allocation and policy formulation.

Officials are expected to carry valid identification during visits, and residents have been advised to verify credentials before sharing information.
